An excerpt from my sailing travelogue aboard the Charles W. Morgan — the last wooden whaling ship in the world. The Morgan hadn’t sailed in nearly 100 years prior to this voyage in the summer of 2014. I joined the crew for a day of hauling lines and watching whales off the coast of Provincetown, reflecting on authenticity, history, and belonging along the way.
